The youth recognise this and are fed up. Murdoch must be held to account and this will be achieved by international reform.

Newscorp owns hundreds of print and digital forms of media. Most prominently;

  • Sky News Australia

  • The Australian

  • The Herald Sun

  • The Daily Telegraph

  • News.com.au

Sky News 

Sky News is the primary cable news station owned by Murdoch that operates in Australia and the United Kingdom.

The program operates as a quasi-news network where real news is reported and additionally, 'opinion' programs are casted. These mostly right leaning opinions are broadcasted to millions of viewers, frequently casting fear mongering and conspiracy theories.

  • SN Australia is the 5th largest news channel in the country

  • SN UK is the 23rd largest channel in the country

Fox news

Fox News is the most popular cable news station in the United States with 1.2 million average viewers per day.

The most extreme in terms of conspiracy theories and right-wing ideology. The channel almost always favours the United States Republican Party, even to the extent to reporting a segment on how the 2020 election was stolen due to digitalised voting machines. After a subsequent lawsuit, Fox was order to pay $787 million in damages.

Fox News has increasingly become a dog whistle utilised to increase hatred and fear related to a culture war surrounding topics like; 

  • LGBTQ+ issues (especially transgender and gender ideology)

  • 'Woke' ideology

  • Women's rights

  • Racism 

  • Integrity of elections

Newspapers

Murdoch's ownership of roughly 70% of Australia's newspapers and the hundreds owned overseas allows for his rhetoric to appear to the general public as news.
By doing this, the bias and frequent lies are churned into 'fact.'

What is being done now?

  • Though there have been several calls for a Royal Commission by former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and now former PM Malcolm Turnbull (who has taken over the campaign as of 2023), a commission has yet to be orchestrated.
       - Over 500,000 signatures
  • A $787 million settlement from Fox News due to a Dominion lawsuit has proven now that Murdoch's empire cannot lie as freely as it did before
  • Independent news outlets and social media have weeded out the dominance of Murdoch's traditional news avenues.
